Why We're Called Breakin' Atoms: The Burning Man Origin Story

By Richard Preval ·

Every clothing brand has a founding story. Most start with a product — a T-shirt someone couldn't find, a fit nobody else was making. Breakin' Atoms started with neither. It started with a name, conceived at Burning Man, years before a single piece of clothing existed.

A Name Before a Product

Burning Man strips things down to essentials. No branding, no packaging, no market research — just people, the desert, and whatever they choose to build or become for a week. It's an environment with a way of surfacing ideas in their rawest form, before anyone else's opinion has had the chance to shape them.

That's where the name Breakin' Atoms came from. Richard Preval — known in his creative work as Gunna Gatsby — wasn't out there building a clothing company that week. He was thinking about obstacles, and about what actually happens when something hits one.

What the Name Actually Means

An atom, split under enough pressure, doesn't just break — it releases energy and becomes raw material for something new. That's not a metaphor borrowed after the fact to justify a good-sounding name. It's the literal physical process the name describes, and it became the philosophy behind everything the brand would eventually make: obstacles become matter, and matter becomes creation.

If you've ever fought through an obstacle, outthought a problem, or outlasted something that should have stopped you, you've already done what an atom does under pressure. The clothing came later — years later — as a way to make that idea visible and wearable. You can read more about how that philosophy plays out across the collections on our About page and in the full Breakin' Atoms manifesto.

From Idea to Brand

It would take time — and a lot of unrelated decisions, sketches, and false starts — before Breakin' Atoms became an actual clothing line based in Miami, FL. But the name never changed, because the idea underneath it never needed to. Every collection since, from the 1804 Collection honoring Haitian history to the Tennis Collection, still runs on the same original logic: take something under pressure, and turn it into something new.

One Clarification, While We're Here

If you've landed here searching for Breaking Atoms, the 1991 hip-hop album by Main Source — that's a different, unrelated thing with a different spelling. Breakin' Atoms (no "g") is an independent premium streetwear brand founded by Richard Preval in Miami in 2017. Different name, different story, no relation — just two ideas that happened to land on similar words.
